BELONGING OVER INFLUENCE

How Brands Earn Cultural Residency
Every brand wants to be part of culture. Most are just passing through it.

Belonging Over Influence is a blueprint for the brands that want to stop being tourists in someone else's world and start building something the community will actually carry forward. Written by Marlino Bitanga, known in the music world as DJ Marlino, brand strategist, and founder of Makeeta, this book makes the case that the influence model is running out of road, and that the communities brands most want to reach have already developed a near-perfect radar for the difference between a brand that belongs and one that is just passing through.

Drawing on over three decades inside both boardrooms and dancefloors, from a cousin's garage in the Bay Area to tens of thousands of people at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, Bitanga uses Filipino culture as the definitive case study for what belonging actually looks like when it's built right, and what it costs when it isn't.

This is not a book about diversity initiatives or heritage month campaigns. It is a book about residency. About earning a permanent place inside a community rather than renting attention from it. About the difference between a brand that gets carried and a brand that keeps spending just to stay visible.

The Filipino community is not a niche. It never was. It is proof that culture moves on belonging, not broadcast. And the brands that understand that now will be carried through the next decade by communities they chose to build with, rather than ones they spent money trying to reach.

Includes the 90-Day Belonging Build, a practical action framework for brand and marketing leaders ready to make the shift from influence to residency.

ABOUT THE BOOK

INFLUENCE FADES. BELONGING COMPOUNDS.

For over two decades, Marlino Bitanga has operated in the space between boardrooms and basements, between the pitch decks and the dancefloors. This book is the record of what that distance is costing brands and a blueprint for closing it.
"Influence is an expense. Belonging is an asset. Trust is what gets carried."
Brands today are chasing reach, buying influence, and optimizing for impressions. Meanwhile, the communities they are trying to connect with have developed a near-perfect radar for the difference between a brand that belongs and a brand that is just passing through.

Through the lens of Filipino culture, one of the most culturally powerful and consistently underestimated communities in the world, this book maps what belonging actually looks like when it is built right. It also explains why the traditional influence model is becoming actively counterproductive in the environments that matter most.
WHO IT'S FOR

FOR THE BRANDS TIRED OF RENTING CULTURE.

This book was written for the people who already sense the model is broken. It gives them the language, the framework, and the proof to do something about it.

BRANDS & MARKETING LEADERS

CMOs, VPs, and strategists who are spending on cultural engagement and wondering why the relationship never deepens.

DEI & PARTNERSHIP TEAMS

Practitioners who want to move beyond Heritage Month moments toward something the community actually claims as its own.

FILIPINO ARTISTS & CREATIVES

The artists who have been building without permission. This book names what you have always known and makes the argument for the industry.

AGENCY & CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS

Anyone who has pitched a cultural campaign, watched it land wrong, and known exactly why but could not get the room to listen.
WHAT'S INSIDE

SIX PARTS. ONE SHIFT.

Structured to move from diagnosis to blueprint, this book takes you from understanding why influence fails in cultural environments to building the kind of residency that lasts past the campaign flight.

1. The limits of influence

Why the broadcast model is becoming counterproductive in high-context cultural environments and why brands keep running it anyway.

2. What belonging does instead

The mechanics of belonging: recognition, participation, and contribution — and why communities can tell the difference before a campaign even launches.

3. How belonging is built

The five pillars: contribution, signals, continuity, ownership, and the autopsy of alignment failure.

4. Where brands go wrong

Flag-washing, borrowing instead of reflecting, forcing instead of revealing. The patterns that show up even when the intention is sincere.

5. Building from the inside

Start with the world, not the message. Work with people who already belong. Stay long enough to matter.

6. The 90-day belonging build

A practical framework for organizations ready to stop being tourists and start building the kind of residency that the community actually grants.
